Why Is Community Service A Part of Denver Gap Year?

The community service aspect of Denver Gap Year is an integral part of our program. It goes far beyond a nice thing for a participant to put on their resume’ or a good deed for the city. We consider it to be a critical step in a young adults journey of being a follower of Jesus Christ.

First we come to understand our redemption through the blood of Jesus and the deep, overwhelming love of God but we must not stop there. From that revelation we work empowered by the Holy Spirit to make disciples and spread the Kingdom of God. It essential that a follower of Jesus understands the values and principles of the Kingdom. At Denver Gap Year we want to guide participants through the theology of a kingdom life in the classroom while giving them opportunities to live it out in the real world.

Combating injustice in all of its forms should be a pursuit of every Christian. The way each Christian does that will vary based off their gifting, season of life and passions. We want to equip the next generation with the tools, experiences and guidance needed for them combat injustice wherever they live.

Denver Gap Year is strategically located in urban Denver with all nonprofits located within the city as well. This was intentional because we believe most of Generation Z will live in major cities located in America. Of course we support participants that want to pursue international missions but demographic trends indicate the vast majority will live in major cities within the USA.  We feel it’s important that they know there will be a plethora of ways to serve in whatever city they live in or job they are working. It’s not necessary to go across the world to make a difference. They can and should do so wherever they are at.

The nonprofits we chose represent a number of different sectors. This was done to practically reiterate the variety of opportunities to serve they can find in any city they live in. They need to know they can match whatever their skills or passions are with a need where they live. This important part of the Kingdom of God will be made clear as they serve weekly with their chosen nonprofit.
